[30 YEARS] Chapter 5: Art material
Located in Les Herbiers, at the heart of a region with a furniture industry history and close to the PRESTIGE plant, the company’s marine carpentry workshop specializes in the transformation of a noble nautical material: wood.
An excellence know-how in marine carpentry
This is where they shape, stain and varnish all of the cabinetry destined for the PRESTIGE yachts, from teak decking to wooden flooring, paneling, furniture, and interior decoration parts..
Manual and technical know-how are equally important in the workshop for the transformation and shaping of the cabinetwork. Each step of the process aims to optimize the quality of the end result, whether it is cutting or shaping the wood, bonding and assembling the parts, or working on finishes.
Varieties of woods are used, such as oak, beech, poplar or even Laius, from Africa. Careful attention is paid to the provenance of the woods used, in the interest of responsibly managing natural resources.
One thing that sets PRESTIGE apart is its interior flooring manufacturing process. The floor boards are cut and stained individually by the same operator, to ensure perfect color uniformity on the floor of each yacht. As for the teak decks, each wooden slat is hand-worked, precision-cut and shaped to the millimeter.
the noble beauty of the wood is enhanced by the skills of the men and women who have made it their craft
You frequently hear that the quality of the varnish is what makes the quality of a yacht. The PRESTIGE workshops perpetuate the remarkable know-how and skills of the men and women, who have become real experts over long years of experience and practice. The trick is in knowing how to mix various varnish and lacquer finishes to create balanced atmospheres from one room to another, in perfect harmony with the upholstery.
With regards to the lacquering technique, Christophe Marionneau, in charge of wood design explains:
Not only do we apply acrylic to wood, but we superimpose a succession of fine lacquer coats until we get the desired result.
As for the varnishes, they come in matt, satin gloss and mirror finish high gloss. The latter is hardest to apply. The varnish can only be manually applied, piece by piece, to achieve an ultraluxurious look, popular with everyone and very much in demand by PRESTIGE owners.
